This authorized biography was made possible through the gracious help of my mother-in-law, Rhoda Kadalie, who provided generous access to her files, letters, photographs, and extensive library of documents. She made time to sit with me for several hours of interviews from September through October 2021, to answer questions as they arose, and to offer innumerable clarifications. Rhoda also reviewed the first draft of the biography in December 2021, making corrections and additions, and contributing some of her own original vignettes, never before published.

In European cultural history, otiose leisure is regarded as the ideal prerequisite for a retreat into self-contemplation. Anna Karina Sennefelder maps out this topos by analyzing nineteenth century French narrative texts. The range of authors investigated reaches from Senancour, Chateaubriand and Stendhal to Marie d'Agoult and George Sand. The central question is which of otiose leisure's characteristics renders it so suitable for autobiographical self-reflection. What emerges is that in such literature, certain places were considered as particularly apt for experiencing leisure and thus conducive to the success of the narrative retrospective of one's own life. In essence therefore, the main focus is on the profiling and conceptual recording of the »retreats of narration".

The proceedings of the conference of the same name assemble papers concentrating largely on Franco-Jewish autobiography in the last few decades. Relevant literature in English and German is also discussed. In addition, three Italian authors of autobiographies comment on their own works. The theoretical reflection undertaken in the volume either accompanies the analysis of individual works or takes a broader view. It centres (a) on the relationship between autobiography and 'auto-fiction', and (b) on the fundamental issue of what we precisely mean when we speak of 'Jewish autobiographies'.

In 'Mothering, Public Leadership, and Women's Life Writing', Claire E. Wolfteich presents a series of case studies in Christian spirituality, bringing mothers' autobiographical writing into focus for theological reflection. From the medieval mystic Margery Kempe to the twentieth-century activist Dorothy Day, from African American preacher Jarena Lee to labor organizer Dolores Huerta, the book mines women's first-person writing, surfacing critical issues for theological analysis. Listening deeply to these diverse maternal voices, the book advances creative theological reflection on work, vocation, time poverty, Sabbath, and spiritual guidance. 'Mothering, Public Leadership, and Women's Life Writing' demonstrates the significance of the study of mothering for theology and spirituality studies and the import of life writing as an underutilized source for practical theology.
